Department of Theatre Programs

Student-focused, hands-on coursework in the Theatre Department encompasses all the arts — literary, performing, visual, digital and electronic. Southern’s close proximity to New Haven and New York City connects students to vibrant performance industries and practical training, and prepares them for a multitude of professions, from employment with touring companies and cruise lines, to careers with television/film studios and commercial theaters. Internship opportunities include: Long Wharf Theatre, Hartford Stage, The Elm Shakespeare Company, and Godspeed Musicals and the New Haven public schools.

The Minor in Theatre offers students the opportunity to explore the fundamentals of storytelling while allowing their personalized interests to thrive through a choice of electives. The Minor requires 18 credits total, 7 of which come from a prescribed list of options, and 11 of which are electives chosen by students that relate best to their particular interest. The skills developed in our performance, design, history, management, devising, and technology courses are easily transferable and can enhance almost every major studies program on campus.

Our B.A. program offers opportunities for students to engage in every facet of theater - from page to stage. Theater students take classes in acting, dancing, elocution, design, technical theater, history, and dramaturgy. And yet they still have the freedom within the curriculum to focus on their studies on areas of interest. Additionally, our students have ample opportunity to apply their classroom knowledge in our four-show season where they are closely mentored by our outstanding faculty professionals.
